Mátyás wines

Mátyás is a small, family-run estate from Nová Vieska (Strekov, South Slovakia), where the family turned a long-held village cellar into a working winery in 2003. Their first bottles followed in 2005, and today they farm about 12 hectares on the sun-facing slopes of Somlyó hill.

From the start, the goal has been simple: grow healthy grapes and let them speak. The vineyards have been organic from planting and certified since 2013. The team is moving toward biodynamics and times many tasks with moon phases, while keeping biodiversity as a core value.

In the cellar, intervention stays low. Fermentations are spontaneous, no cultured yeasts or enzymes are used, and the wines rest in oak for as long as possible. Fining and filtration are avoided; the wine is kept on its lees until bottling for stability and texture.

The estate is led by András Mátyás and his family. They are part of the Autentista movement in the Danube region, a group that commits to estate fruit, native microflora, wooden barrels, and accepting the character of each vintage rather than shaping it with additives. The aim is wines that show where they come from and respect local traditions.

For drinkers, this means clear, honest bottles from Central Europe that feel close to the land. Expect calm, dry wines with gentle structure and food-friendly profiles—from local whites to lighter reds—made to be opened at the table, not studied. If you are curious about natural wine but want balance and clarity, Mátyás offers a steady hand and a sense of place in every glass.
