Celler Escoda-Sanahuja is a family winery in Prenafeta, in Conca de Barberà, created in 1999 by Joan Ramon Escoda and Mari Carme Sanahuja as a life project built around biodynamic farming and natural wine. Before starting his own cellar, Joan Ramon worked in a large Catalan winery and travelled in France, where he moved closer to biodynamics and low-intervention winemaking.

What makes this producer important in the natural wine scene is not only the style of the wines, but the consistency of the idea behind them. Since the 2005 vintage, Escoda-Sanahuja has worked without added sulphites, using native yeasts and avoiding filtration, fining, and stabilisation. In the vineyard, the family keeps plant cover between the rows and uses compost from its own small farm, treating the vineyard as part of a wider living system rather than a separate crop.

Joan Ramon is also one of the people who helped shape the natural wine movement in Spain: he co-founded PVN, the country’s first natural wine association, and helped organise H2O, a fair focused on wines made without additives.

For wine drinkers, Escoda-Sanahuja is interesting because the wines feel personal. Alongside local grapes, Joan Ramon also works with varieties like Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, showing the influence of his time in the Loire. The result is a range of wines that stay close to the place, but also reflect a winemaker who chose intuition, farming, and freedom over standard rules.
