Matija Žerjav - Matic Wines

Matic Wines

Matic Wines is a small, family estate in Štajerska (Slovenian Styria) led by winemaker Matija Žerjav, known simply as Matic. He grew up among the vines and is now the third generation to care for them. His goal is clear: make honest wines that show the hills where he lives.

The vineyards are farmed organically with a biodynamic mindset. Most work is by hand. In the cellar, Matic keeps things simple: native-yeast fermentations, minimal handling, and wines that are usually unfined and unfiltered. Sulfur is kept low. This approach is part of his “slow, artisanal” philosophy—letting time and nature do the work.

Matic’s region is known for lively white wines, and he adds his own touch with skin-contact (orange) styles and occasional amphora aging. You’ll also find fresh stainless-steel bottlings and playful sparklers like pét-nat.

He focuses on local grapes such as Šipon (Furmint) and Laški Rizling (Welschriesling), alongside Riesling, Kerner, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Yellow Muscat. The idea is not to chase trends but to bottle clean, characterful wines for the table—wines to share with friends.

If you’re new to Matic, start with Šipon for a bright, saline white; try one of his skin-contact bottles to see how texture and aroma grow with time on the skins; or open a pét-nat for something fun and easygoing. However you begin, you’ll taste a straightforward expression of place and a winemaker who trusts his land.
