Kolónia 52

Kolónia 52 is the project of Annamaria Török and Attila Francisti, two Hungarian winemakers based on Szent György-hegy, near Lake Balaton. Before starting their own cellar, they travelled widely and worked with important names in biodynamic and natural wine, including Heinrich and Gut Oggau. Their winery began in 2021, and even the name has a personal story: it comes from the tiny cellar where they first made wine together, on Kolónia Street number 52.

What makes Kolónia 52 easy to like is the clear idea behind it. They work on a small scale because they want to stay close to the vineyards and keep control of quality. Farming is organic, supported by biodynamic methods, with a lot of handwork in the vines. They also care strongly about biodiversity, planting trees and encouraging herbs and natural life around the vineyards instead of forcing the land.

Their vineyards lie on volcanic soils, with basalt and some limestone, which helps give the wines tension, freshness, and a strong sense of place. They grow both local and international grapes, including Furmint, Olaszrizling, Kékfrankos, Riesling, and Pinot Noir. In the cellar, the approach is simple: hand harvest, spontaneous fermentation, gentle extraction, aging in used barrels or amphora, and little to no sulfur unless really necessary. The result is a range of lively, honest wines that feel rooted in the landscape rather than shaped by heavy intervention.
