Bleu de Hongrie means “Hungarian Blue” in French, a nod to Kékfrankos, also known as Blaufränkisch, the dark-skinned grape at the heart of this red wine. The grapes come from an organic estate in Pécsely, near Lake Balaton, where limestone and sandstone soils help shape a wine with a clear, fresh character.

To keep the wine light on its feet, it was made in two parts: one with whole bunches and hand-destemmed grapes, the other using a semi-carbonic method with direct-pressed juice and whole bunches. This approach brings out fruit and freshness while avoiding too much heaviness. Ageing in large barrels and amphora adds gentle texture without covering the grape’s natural energy.

Production area: Balaton

D.O.: Balatonmelléki

Grapes: Blaufränkisch

Alcohol: 12.6%

Vinification: 2024 was the hottest summer so far, so the wine was made from two batches. One was fermented the usual way, 50% whole bunches and 50% hand-destemmed. The other was semi-carbonic, 50% direct pressed juice and 50% whole bunches. This kept the freshness and gave less extraction. Aged 15 months in 500-600 l barrels and a 500 l amphora.
