Agrícola Calcárea
Agrícola Calcárea is the personal project of Juan Jurado in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the Marco de Jerez. Juan did not come from a wine family: his background was in olive growing. After many years abroad, working in hospitality and learning from wineries in countries such as Australia, Chile, and Italy, he returned to Andalusia and decided to build something of his own. In 2021 he bought a small 1.2-hectare vineyard in Pago Miraflores, and his first vintage followed in 2022.
His idea is simple but serious: make honest wines that speak more about the vineyard than the cellar. He works by hand, farms organically, uses native yeasts, keeps sulphur low, and prefers a light touch in winemaking. He is also interested in recovering old local grapes and keeping alive a more open, less fixed idea of what wines from this part of Andalusia can be.
The name Agrícola Calcárea points to the white albariza soils of the area, rich in calcium carbonate. These soils were once under the sea and are valued because they hold water well, which matters in the hot south. Together with the Atlantic breeze, they help give Juan’s wines their tension, saltiness, and sense of place.
