
Red Grenache
Grenache Noir (also called Garnacha) is a red grape that loves warm, sunny climates. It is especially popular in natural wine, where minimal interference allows its generous fruit flavors to shine. Many growers use organic or low-impact techniques to bring out Grenache’s approachable character, resulting in easy-drinking but full-bodied wines.
This grape thrives in southern France and Spain, where it often appears in both red and rosé wines. In the Languedoc or the Southern Rhône, it may be blended with Syrah or Mourvèdre to create reds with soft tannins and ripe, red-fruit notes. In Spain, Garnacha can develop sweet cherry and peppery hints, blending well with Tempranillo to form a classic Rioja style. Natural winemakers prize Grenache for its ability to ferment spontaneously and develop layered aromas—from black cherry and dried fig to subtle spice.
Because of its round texture and moderate acidity, Grenache pairs well with many foods. It stands up to roasted pork, grilled lamb, or poultry in sauce, and it also highlights spicy dishes like couscous or paella. For rosé versions, fresh seafood and light pastas are perfect matches, thanks to Grenache’s gentle fruit flavors and silky mouthfeel.
When carefully tended in the vineyard, Grenache produces rich wines with balanced warmth. However, if yields are too high, it can lose color and intensity. Natural winemakers typically keep yields low, preserving the grape’s depth and smoothness. Whether in a cheerful rosé or a robust red, Grenache offers a taste of sun-soaked vineyards and lively gatherings with friends. Its straightforward appeal makes it a favorite for anyone discovering natural wines.
