Impressio is a light, juicy red from southern Slovakia, made mostly from Pinot Noir with a touch of Blaufränkisch. The vines grow on limestone, loess and sandstone and are farmed organically and biodynamically. Part of the Pinot Noir plot is left unpruned as an experiment: this slows down ripening in hot summers, keeps sugar and pH in balance and helps the wine stay fresh and lively.
The grapes are picked early, fermented with wild yeasts and spend about two weeks on the skins, then rest for 4–5 months in old oak barrels, just enough to round off the edges. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with very low sulphites, so a little sediment is normal.
In the glass, expect lots of red fruit – think redcurrant, pomegranate, cranberry and cherry – with a gentle spicy note and bright acidity that makes you want another sip. Impressio is made to be joyful and easy to drink, but with enough character to keep you thinking.
