Macchiona is La Stoppa’s signature red, a slow-made wine from the clay hills south of Piacenza. It comes from old Barbera and Croatina vines rooted in the estate’s “Ancient Red Soils”, rich in iron and very poor in nutrients. This tough environment gives small berries, concentrated juice and a wine that needs time to open up – which is why Macchiona always spends many years resting in large old oak casks, steel and finally in bottle before it leaves the cellar.
Fermented with native yeasts, with long contact on the skins and no filtration or added sulphur, Macchiona is all about pure fruit and place. In the glass it shows deep colour, with aromas of ripe red berries, warm earth, spice and a touch of savoury complexity. On the palate it is full of flavour yet fresh, with firm but polished tannins and a long, savoury finish. A characterful country red, built for slow meals, rich dishes and for those who enjoy wines that develop beautifully with age.
