Atanasius from Gut Oggau is a natural red wine from Burgenland, Austria, made from the native varieties Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. The vineyards grow on gravel and limestone soils and are farmed biodynamically, following Demeter-certified practices. Harvesting is done by hand, and fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in large used oak barrels. The wine macerates on the skins for several weeks and ages for about 11 months in oak, before being bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulphur.
Part of Gut Oggau’s “family” of wines, Atanasius represents one of the younger characters – energetic, open, and rooted in its land. In the glass, it shows vibrant red fruit, with notes of cherry and wild berries, sometimes accompanied by a light natural fizz. Its freshness, earthy undertones, and unpolished style reflect both the character of the Burgenland soils and the winery’s philosophy of minimal intervention.
Easy to enjoy with food or on its own, Atanasius is a lively and approachable expression of Austria’s natural wine movement, inviting you to experience a pure and unfiltered side of Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt.
