Cru Blanc is a very characterful sparkling wine from the coast of Catalonia, made only from Cartoixà (Xarel·lo) grown in the single vineyard La Caseta. The vines sit 210 metres above sea level and just a few kilometres from the Mediterranean, on silty, chalky soils that help give the wine its clear, salty edge and dry, mineral feel.
Grapes are harvested by hand and left as whole bunches to gently infuse for several days before fermenting with native yeasts. The wine then finishes its fermentation in the bottle and stays there for many years, often close to a decade, before it is released. There is no make-up added: very low intervention, usually unfiltered, and with no dosage, so the wine stays naturally dry.
In the glass you can expect fine bubbles, notes of lemon peel, raw almond, bread crust and Mediterranean herbs, wrapped in a firm, fresh acidity and a long, salty finish. If you enjoy serious, dry sparkling wines that really taste of their place, this is one to discover.
