Léon Chardonnay from Les Bottes Rouges is a natural white wine from Arbois in the Jura. The cuvée is named in tribute to the producer’s grandfather and comes from old Chardonnay vines planted around 1956. Grown on clay-loam soils, it shows a clear mineral side, with notes of citrus, fresh acidity and a light salty finish.
Unlike the more oxidative style sometimes found in the Jura, Léon is made in a topped-up way, giving a cleaner and more direct expression of Chardonnay. The grapes are directly pressed, fermented with native yeasts and aged for 18 months in large used barrels. It is a good match for seafood, grilled fish, roast chicken or hard cheeses such as Comté.
