Les Insouciantes, “the carefree ones”, is a joyful red from the Jura hills around Saint-Lothain. It comes from organically farmed 40-year-old vines rooted in limestone and blue marl at about 300 metres, in vineyards full of life – birds, spiders, rabbits and rich plant diversity.
The wine is an unusual blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Poulsard and Trousseau, mixing classic Burgundian grapes with local Jura varieties and even a white grape in a red wine. The grapes are hand-harvested, gently destemmed and left to ferment with their own yeasts in a semi-carbonic style, then rest around ten months in stainless steel. There is no added sulphur, no fining, no filtration and no adjustment of sugar or acidity – just pure fruit.
In the glass, expect a bright ruby colour, vibrant red berry aromas of raspberry and blackcurrant, with hints of forest floor, porcini and clove. On the palate it is fresh, light, slightly tannic and very drinkable, perfect a little cool with roast chicken, grilled meats, charcuterie or simply with friends.
